A local man was free on bond after a grocery employee thwarted a reported robbery attempt Sunday evening by tackling the suspect and holding him until police arrived.

Chauncey E. Kynard, 22, of 621 Bluff St., was charged with theft after reportedly trying to snatch an undetermined amount of money out of an open cash register drawer at the Super Mercado at about 6 p.m.

Police reports said a man, later identified as Kynard, entered the store with a second suspect and browsed before walking up to the counter to purchase a soda. As the second man prepared to pay for the drink, police said Kynard allegedly reached into the open register and grabbed several bills before running toward the front door.

Before Kynard was able to exit the store, he was met by an employee, Victor Reyes, 38. Reports said Reyes allegedly threw Kynard to the ground and held him with the help of two fellow employees until police arrived.

The second suspect escaped, reports said.
