Village officials say a new head count of their residents means they can expect to get more government money.

The U.S. Census Bureau has agreed to conduct a special census of the village, which could translate into tens of thousands of additional federal and state dollars during the remainder of the decade.

The special census is offered by the bureau to villages that want to capitalize on additions to their populations because state and federal dollars are allocated based on population figures.

Census officials stress it’s not an admission that the original total was in error, although Manhattan village officials said they felt shorted in 1990’s count.

Towns in which a special census is conducted provide the funding, in Manhattan’s case about $10,000.

The 1990 count placed the village’s population at 2,059 up from 1,944 in 1980. Village officials hope to add at least 200 to 300 to that figure.
