Four South Side men who allegedly kidnapped a former Illinois State University basketball player and his girlfriend, raped the girlfriend and then fatally shot them both were being held on $1 million bond, authorities said Tuesday. A fifth man was being held on $1.5 million bond.
Scott Chambers, 18, of 3711 S. King Drive; Carl Williams, 17, of 5125 S. Loomis St.; Zarice Johnson, 24, of 630 E. Pershing Rd.; and Anthony Brown, 22, of 3847 S. Vincennes Ave., each were ordered held on $1 million bond by Cook County Circuit Judge Ronald Bartkowicz when they appeared in weekend bond court.
The fifth defendant, Stanley Hamlin, 20, of 730 E.Pershing Rd., was ordered held on $1.5 million bond by Bartkowicz.
They are accused of abducting Reginald Wilson, 23, and his girlfriend, Felicia Lewis, 20, as they sat in Wilson’s 1989 Chevy Blazer at a Shell gasoline station, 7859 S. State St., in the early morning hours last Thursday.
Police have said Wilson and Lewis were waiting for a friend who was in the restroom of the gas station when the five men forced their way into the Blazer at gunpoint and forced Wilson and Lewis into the back seat. The friend ran up to the Blazer but was told to back away. The friend called police.
The couple were driven to another location where the assailants sexually assaulted Lewis, according to court records. They then were taken to an alley in the 4800 block of South Vincennes where they were forced to climb into a trash bin. Once inside, both were shot multiple times in the head, according to court records.
Wilson had attended the ISU campus at Bloomington-Normal where he played basketball and became the first player in the school’s history to be named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year. During the 1990-91 season, he became only one of five players in ISU history to lead the team in scoring and rebounding in the same season.
His future in basketball was cut short when he broke his leg while rebounding during a game.
Undaunted, Wilson graduated in 1992, and after an internship with the Morton Grove Park District in Skokie, he landed a job with the Chicago Transit Authority.
Lewis, who had one child, was a nursing student. She and friends had watched Wilson play basketball with a CTA team on Wednesday night, hours before they were murdered.
Their assailants, who all have been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated vehicular hijacking, were caught after two of them were stopped in Sauk Village later Thursday as they drove the stolen Blazer, police said.
If convicted, all are eligible for the death penalty, according to Illinois statutes.
