The five top-selling items in U.S. supermarkets last year, according to Supermarket Business magazine, were beef (6.15 percent of store sales), beer (4.06 percent), cigarettes (3.83 percent), soft drinks (3.23 percent) and doughnuts and other in-store bakery products (3.16 percent).
