As a member of the Lincoln Park High School Local School Council, I find your coverage of positive school activities abysmal, at best.

Our annual school science fair was held Jan. 14 with more than 300 teens participating with some incredibly interesting research projects. A press release was faxed out notifying the media.

That night on the news, what was covered? The confiscation of handguns from grade school children. The message to teens is: Guns make you big news; science projects don’t. If I am a teenager in need of peer acceptance and self-esteem, which would I choose?

As a society, we need to stop telling young people one thing and espousing another. Education does not and should not stop at the schoolroom door. Teens recognize hypocrisy when they see it.
