While I applaud your Jan. 24 article on the bald eagle retreat along the Mississippi, I think you have a responsibility to educate novice bird watchers who are enticed to the Mississippi area as a result of this article.

Your quote, “I can’t believe you can get so close to them,” may encourage people to indeed come too close, thereby frightening them and possibly forcing them to find other areas to roost that are not as conducive to their survival.

People should respect the eagles and maintain a distance of at least 300 yards, if not more. In fact, fines are imposed in some areas for anyone venturing closer. Binoculars and scopes should be used for anyone desiring a closer view.

If everyone is sensitive to them and respects their environment, we will all be able to enjoy these “majestic” creatures for years to come.
