Village officials have ended a long-standing policy of charging residents a portion of the cost of replacing trees on parkways.

Before the change, property owners were charged $50 of the $250 it cost the village to plant a tree. The Forestry Division routinely removes diseased and dead trees from parkways that are village-owned.

Under the new policy, there will be no charge for a replacement tree if it is asked for within 30 days of removal. If requested after 90 days of removal, a resident will be charged $50 for a replacement tree, said Richard Rolseth, a Forestry Division supervisor.
