In contrast to this San Diego quartet’s 3-million-selling 1992 debut, “Purple” has a handful of catchy melodies and a few pretty acoustic ditties to go along with its tractor-pull rewrites of the hit “Plush.” But it’s an equally hollow, superficial album. After a few listens, the elaborate but unfussy production by Brendan O’Brien (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam) can no longer camoflouge the band’s mediocre rhythm section and recycled grunge chords. Then there’s the overbearing angst of singer Scott Weiland. “Flies in the Vaseline we are,” he bellows. You wish, pal.
