Alan L. Light in a letter (June 19) stated that conservative Christianity as a political force represents a serious threat to the democratic process. May I contend that conservative Christian ideology was the springboard for catapulting religiously oppressed peoples to America and that their beliefs were the sole and solid root of our democracy.
We have welcomed an ever-growing diversity of races and religions to our shores, and all are still free to worship whomever and wherever they please. So why are Christian beliefs now the only anathema?
Why is it when any other group fights to protect its rights and beliefs it is given a hearing, but when Christians come forward at a time when their voice is greatly needed, they are labeled “political” and “dictatorial”?
No, conservative Christians are not “dictating personal behavior” nor are we “intolerant of human differences.” We are promoting common sense and values that work. We could once again have a nation living together peaceably.
