I am writing this in response to the Bob Greene articles on the Baby Richard case. Being a teacher for many years, I have come to know many children whose emotional and learning difficulties have been the result of being products of dysfunctional families.

In today’s stressful world, educators expect these problems and are continuously learning to meet these challenges. What we don’t expect is for our esteemed Illinois Supreme Court to be the cause of yet another child facing enormous difficulties. That is precisely what it has done when the court turned 3 1/2-year-old Richard over to his biological father.

By pulling an innocent, happy child from an intact, loving family, our justices have ensured yet another child will face difficulties which could have been avoided. Our justices should be sentenced to watch Richard grow and view the result of their decision. Problems? The odds are a lot better than the lottery.
