One of the tragic outcomes of health-care reform is the potential exclusion of abortion and other reproductive health-care services for women.
For too long women’s health has been overlooked and underfunded. Excluding abortion from the benefits package would be a major step backward for women.
According to an Alan Guttmacher Institute study, two-thirds of private insurance companies include abortion. Under most health-care reform proposals, we will maintain a system of private insurance. Public funding will subsidize care for the poor, the aged and possibly some small businesses.
Tax dollars are spent on programs and policies based on a vision to create a better society. There is rarely uniform agreement on how our tax dollars should be spent.
Omitting abortion coverage because some people object to the fundamental constitutional right to abortion will ultimately endanger women’s lives. The fair policy is to include abortion coverage and allow women to make their own decisions.
