After years of financial decline that led to hardships for School District U-46, officials heard some good money news for a change this week:

The 1993-94 budget ended up $1.6 million in the black.

“We made some inroads on the deficit. It’s an excellent performance,” said board member Robert Erickson.

Officials attributed the fiscal surplus to keeping a handle on expenses, as well as some unexpected revenues from the state.

In spite of the positive tone, a lot of ground must be made up to erase the accumulated deficit, which prompted the district to eliminate more than 200 teaching positions last spring.

“We’re still $26 million in the negative,” said Gordon Schulz, assistant superintendent for finances.
