Walter Talaga’s July 20 letter asks “when are the American people born here going to wake up and take control of our country?” I can’t speak for Mr. Talaga, but my great-grandparents were not Native Americans. Without open borders, I would not be here.

Immigration made America great. The person who risks life and limb coming to America on a creaky boat is exactly the risk-taking, hard-working person this country needs. Why should someone in America by an accident of birth have the right to keep someone else out?

For a country founded by people fleeing persecution, to turn away Haitian refugees is morally reprehensible. I have more faith in America than to think our only hope lies in denying others the same opportunities others gave us.
