The only way we will ever eliminate the discharge of pollutants from inadequate and overloaded sewage treatment plants that arrive at our beaches (“Bacteria swims at beaches, too,” Aug. 10) is to stop using our lakes and rivers as the final stage of sewage treatment.

If that final stage were the irrigation and fertilization of growing plants, we could have lower-costing food, clothing, fuel and housing, let alone safe beaches.
