A 23-year-old Downers Grove man was arrested last week after being stopped for allegedly running a stop sign and being linked to the theft of gasoline from Amoco, 2 E. Roosevelt Rd., police said. Police said they stopped a 1980 Ford Bronco at Washington Street and Monterey Avenue, only to have it roll backward into a patrol car as an officer went to speak to David J. Dietschweiler, of 6323 Washington St. Dietschweiler was charged with theft after a service station employee identified him as the man who drove away without paying for gasoline valued at $29, police said. Police noted that Dietschweiler’s truck had four treadless tires, no outside mirrors, a missing gas cap and a faulty transmission lever that made it difficult to stop the vehicle, explaining why Dietschweiler carried wooden blocks to wedge under a tire.
