The city’s Finance Committee decided Thursday night to conduct an in-depth examination of a proposal to re-establish an economic development commission.
That examination will come next month, when the panel also talks about the city’s sign code and comprehensive plan code in conjunction with the possible formation of the commission.
Economic development, particularly of a deteriorating strip mall along Irving Park Road, became an issue during the April mayoral campaign. The Georgetown Mall recently was sold to a developer who has not yet presented plans to the city for how it will be renovated.
Ald. Lane Moyer suggested Thursday night that a new economic development commission be established to attract businesses to the community, as well as to review plans for redeveloping and maintaining older businesses, such as the Georgetown Mall.
Former Mayor Jerry Greer disbanded the former economic development several years ago.
