A local man was charged Wednesday night with driving over his wife with his van in the parking lot of El Barrio restaurant, 1122 Diamond Lake Rd., police said.
Armando Arebalo, 36, 513 E. Orchard St., was charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol, police reports said.
According to Police Cmdr. Pat Pender, Arebalo and his wife, Maria, also 36, had an argument in the parking lot. When Arebalo tried to drive off, Maria reportedly jumped on the passenger-side running board and clung to the van, Pender said.
But she reportedly fell off and Arebalo allegedly drove over her, crushing her pelvis and causing massive internal injuries, Pender said. She was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge where she was in critical condition Thursday afternoon, hospital officials said.
