In his letter titled “Progress on school real estate issue” (Voice, June 15), Charley Gillispie, chief financial officer of the Chicago Public Schools, inadvertently identified the underlying problem affecting the schools.

He states, “. . . buying and managing real estate is not our business. It is not, nor should it be, what we do best. What we do best is teach.”

Therein lies the problem. Every major department of the Chicago Public Schools is headed by an educator. Educators are trained to teach, not to run real estate or maintenance operations. Educators should stick to what they know best, teaching.

The new Chicago School Authority must search for the best available experts to manage our schools. We can no longer tolerate mismanagement.
