A so-called power shopping center is being planned near Richmond, Va., by Homart Development Co., the Chicago-based commercial real estate development firm. It said it wants to build a 700,000-square-foot power shopping center, one with several major tenants rather than a couple of large ones with several smaller stores.

The center would be built on 140 acres at the southwest interchange of Va. 288 and U.S. 360.

Homart, a subsidiary of Sears, Roebuck and Co., expects to file a rezoning request for the project shortly.

By building a power center on the site, Homart said it is abandoning plans to build a regional shopping mall.
