Three men escaped serious injury Sunday night when their van severed a utility pole at Villa Street and Varsity Drive, police said. The driver of the vehicle, Roberto Vega, 30, of 298 Beverly Ter., Elgin, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and other traffic offenses, police said.
