Caterpillar Inc. and the United Auto Workers said Monday they will hold three days of talks in a renewed effort to resolve the 14-month strike at the heavy-equipment company.

The UAW contacted Caterpillar to request bargaining meetings Aug. 29-31, and the company agreed, according to a statement by Wayne Zimmerman, Caterpillar vice president, and Richard Shoemaker, UAW vice president.

UAW members walked off their jobs in June 1994 in a dispute over work rules and job security.

The meeting probably will be held in the Bloomington or Springfield areas, the statement said.
