Philippines President Fidel Ramos expressed gratitude Sunday to the family of a United Arab Emirates man for dropping its demand for the execution of the Filipino maid who killed him.

Sarah Balabagan, 16, said she stabbed to death Almas Mohammed al-Baloushi, 85, at his home in Al-Ain in July 1994 after he tried to rape her.

She was sentenced to death last month by an Islamic court, which rescinded its ruling at the family’s request over the weekend.

Ramos said he hopes the family’s decision to extend mercy will lead to a “satisfactory” resolution of the case.
