Convicted murderer George DelVecchio is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection for the 1977 killing of 6-year-old Tony Canzoneri during a home invasion and robbery at the boy’s Northwest Side home. DelVecchio also was convicted of sexually assaulting the boy’s mother. Unless he is granted a last-minute reprieve by Gov. Jim Edgar or the courts, DelVecchio, 47, of Chicago, will be the fifth Illinois Death Row inmate to be executed this year.

The execution is scheduled for early Wednesday at Stateville Correctional Center near Joliet
