Mayor Daley’s first idea about building an indoor multipurpose domed stadium to house the Chicago Bears was correct. It did not meet with approval primarily because the Bears would have to play on artificial turf.
Why can’t we build a dome with natural grass? This can be done without a retractable roof.
We simply divide the field in two. In reality the two 50-yard sections would be giant planters on rollers and would roll in opposite directions. The goal posts would fold down, and the giant planters would roll under the stands underground (including under the parking lot, if necessary). The underground area would be climate-controlled, with artificial lighting that is conducive to maintaining healthy grass. It wouldn’t have to be more than 8 feet high, which is enough room to mow and fertilize, etc. Once the grass is rolled away, the dome could be used for trade shows, conventions, concerts, etc.
This technology exists. I’m sure we could move 50 yards of turf 60 or 70 yards and then back to its original spot in this day and age.
Chicago is famous for its architecture and its architects. This simple solution would make the purists happy and, above all, would be what is best for Chicago.
