UAW in weekend contract vote: The United Auto Workers union said its membership will consider a new contract proposed by Caterpillar Inc. and will vote on it Saturday and Sunday. Caterpillar said it met with the UAW bargaining committees for about 90 minutes on Tuesday in Peoria. at that time, the company said, it presented what it termed a full, comprehensive proposal. About 8,700 UAW members remain on strike at eight Caterpillar plants in a walkout launched in June 1994.
