Reader Clint Pross’s response (Voice, Jan. 2) to Ellen Goodman’s column titled “What it takes to be a modern corporate hero” (Op-Ed, Dec.26) presents a short-sighted position that is all too common among corporate management and investors.

Many corporations are living for today’s profits. The concept of the long-term common good is forsaken for current jumps in profits, stock prices and executive bonuses. What will happen tomorrow when our society becomes polarized into the privileged few and an unem-ployed or underemployed working class? That is a vision of a society I would not care to have my children live in. All Americans must refocus on the importance of fairness and the common good.
