Three former NBA players–Alex English, Len Elmore and Paul Silas–are no longer in the running to become head of the NBA Players Association.
They were eliminated after interviewing for the executive director’s job during the All-Star break.
Attorneys for the union said Monday three candidates remain: Charles Bennett, former financial adviser to the union; William Hunter, former U.S. attorney for the Northern District of California; and Bill Strickland, a Washington sports attorney.
A search committee headed by Buck Williams, president of the union, decided to retain a professional search firm to identify additional candidates to succeed Simon Gourdine, who was dismissed last month.
In other actions at the All-Star meeting, the player reps approved two amendments to the union’s constitution. The first requires a simple majority vote of all players for approval of any collective-bargaining agreement with the league. Previously, approval required only a three-quarters vote of the player reps. The other amendment requires that the new executive director of the union get a two-thirds vote from the player reps and executive committee members.
