Mark W. Field will drop the title of acting chief of police Friday when he officially takes over as head of the 66-member department.

Field, 40, a Wheaton resident, was named to the acting position in December after the retirement of Carl Dobbs, who had headed department since 1980.

Field was appointed a deputy chief in 1991 after 14 years with the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department, where he held the rank of chief of administrative services.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Olivet Nazarene University in 1977 and received a master’s in public administration from Governors State University in 1983.

“It’s easy walking into a situation like this, where Dobbs had laid a foundation of integrity and accountability,” Field said.

Field said he intends to make no major changes.

“I am not a technology-equipment-driven person. I’m driven by values,” he said.
