Thousands of nomads in northeastern Mongolia are fighting to save their tents and cattle from a huge spreading fire, officials said Monday. “The fire is fierce and is spreading fast” because of high winds, the governor of Dashbalbar County in northeastern Dornod province told Reuters. “Nearly all of our more than 3,000 people are fighting it.” The fire, which roared across the border from Russia last week and burned through 618 square miles of land by the weekend, has killed at least one person. It was not clear how many people in the lightly populated region were threatened.
