Westinghouse takes big writeoff: Westinghouse Electric Corp. said it would take an $813 million charge in the first quarter to sell its environmental services businesses, establish reserves for possible legal settlements, adopt accounting changes and close a Florida plant. The charge, equal to about $1.85 a share, will be offset by the previously announced gain of $1.2 billion, or $2.67 a share, it will take from the earlier sales of its defense electronics unit and the Knoll Group, a maker of office furniture.
