U.S. Robotics Corp. reported fiscal second-quarter earnings of $51.6 million, or $1.10 a share, compared to a loss of $5 million, or 13 cents a share, a year earlier, when the company’s profits were wiped out by merger costs of $21.8 million, or 55 cents a share. Without the one-time charge, net income in last year’s second quarter was $16.8 million, or 42 cents a share.

The Skokie-based maker of personal-computer modems and other telecommunications hardware said revenues in the quarter, ended March 31, climbed 145 percent, to $454.5 million from $185.1 million, including its merger costs.

For the six months, earnings rose 210 percent, to $93.2 million, or $1.99 a share, from $30 million, or 76 cents a share, excluding merger costs of $23.2 million, or 59 cents per share. Six-month sales were up 128 percent, to $819.3 million from $358.6 million a year earlier.
