Rosemary K. Sazonoff, 79, a suburban journalist, was a feature writer and general assignment reporter for two decades for Lerner Newspapers. Before that, she wrote a column, “Life in Deerfield,” for the Deerfield Review.
She also was a former president of the Deerfield Public Library, the Deerfield Area Historical Society, the Deerfield Area League of Women Voters and the School District 110 Parents Teachers Association.
A longtime resident of Deerfield, she died Wednesday in Prospect Heights.
“She wrote with vitality, and I enjoyed editing her copy,” Leigh Hanlon, who worked with her at Lerner Newspapers, said. “She was a staunch defender of 1st Amendment rights, and younger people in the newsroom were always surprised to see how committed she was. I guess they thought someone her age was past caring about freedom of expression.”
She was a member of the Deerfield Youth Council for 19 years and the Deerfield Library Board of Trustees for 22 years.
Survivors include four sons, Peter, Michael, Richard and Jonathan; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Weinstein Brothers Memorial Chapel, 111 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette.
