Construction may begin as early as next spring on the long-awaited widening of 143rd Street, the Orland Park area’s congested two-lane, east-west roadway.
“It’s a done deal,” state Sen. William Maher (R-Orland Park) said at a news conference Monday evening. “The State of Illinois has committed to the complete cost of widening 143rd Street.”
Construction and land acquisition to widen 3 miles of road, from Harlem Avenue to La Grange Road, to a five-lane thoroughfare is expected to cost $11.1 million, said Orland Park Mayor Dan McLaughlin, who also attended the news conference.
The 65-year-old road is notorious for traffic and safety problems because of a lack of shoulders and turn lanes.
