Two research groups have gathered the best evidence yet that Kaposi’s sarcoma, a cancer common among AIDS patients, is caused by a sexually transmitted herpes virus distinct from HIV.

Such a connection would mean there is hope that the virus can be blocked by a vaccine, even while AIDS remains incurable.

Kaposi’s sarcoma is a disease common among homosexual men with AIDS but rare in other populations. It can be fatal if it strikes the lungs.
