A 12-year-old girl was convicted Wednesday of killing a 2-year-old girl at an unlicensed day-care center last May.
A jury found the girl guilty of criminally negligent homicide and injury to a child for dropping and kicking the toddler to death.
The defendant admitted she killed the girl, Jayla Belton, but said it was an accident.
Travis County Medical Examiner Robert Bayardo testified that the victim had been kicked so hard that her liver was split nearly in two. Jurors will begin considering the girl’s punishment Thursday. She faces a maximum of 40 years in prison.
