Although the prospect of definitive evidence for past life on Mars is extraordinary, this should not be taken as proof of independent evolution. It is conceivable that the same sequence of events, involving a meteor or asteroid collision with Earth, could have sent fragments of Earth to Mars and therefore seeded its environment with our life forms.

I am surprised that PCR (polymerase chain reaction) techniques have not yet been reported to have been employed to detect any fragments of DNA, which could possibly yield sequence homology with known “Earth” forms. This reported evidence is too preliminary to make judgments.
