Jack Dee, 93, a longtime salesman who lived and worked in Chicago most of his life, died August 9 in Orinda, Calif. Mr. Dee was a 50-year-employee of Toledo Scales, and the company used his selling techniques in its training films. He once stood at the door of a shop, throwing pennies onto the sidewalk to illustrate the money a grocer was losing from each sale by not having an accurate weighing machine such as the one that Mr. Dee was trying to sell him. He began selling for Toledo Scales in the 1920s, often driving country roads in a Model T to meet butchers and grocers in Nebraska and the Dakotas. He retired from the company in 1975. Survivors include a son, Ivan; a daughter, Frances DeSoto; two brothers; a sister; four grandsons; two granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Piser Weinstein Menorah Chapels, 9200 Skokie Blvd., Skokie.
