Weary firefighters struggled to contain dozens of big wildfires across the western United States on Thursday as a combination of hot weather, gusting winds and dry brush stoked the flames.

New fires broke out in California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Wyoming, and others spread voraciously as temperatures soared into the 100s in some areas.

The Idaho-based National Interagency Fire Center said more than 15,000 firefighters were assigned to 43 large fires that had burned more than 450,000 acres of grass and woodland in seven states.

Among the states hit hardest were Oregon, with 12 big fires, and California with 11.
