This week, during the Democratic National Convention, the Democrats will be heaping praise on President Bill Clinton and boasting of their accomplishments during the last three years in attempts to define themselves as different from the Republicans.

I would, however, like to remind the public at large that we should hold the Democrats and Republicans alike responsible for the numerous closures of the federal government last winter.

Our elected representatives are entrusted with the great responsibility of leading the nation, of legislating and providing funds for operation of the government. Frankly, these representatives let us down. The fact that they held hostage government employees and the services they provide proved that they are more interested in political gain than the needs of the average man or woman whom they represent. Their actions were indeed shameful.

I ask all our federal representatives to please resolve to work toward consensus and compromise when necessary. Yes, you may disagree with the opposing party, but never let the desires of a few supersede the needs of society as a whole.

Furthermore, debate should always be conducted in a manner that respects other people and brings honor to you, your constituency and your nation. Let us have less name-calling and more honest dialogue. You owe us nothing less.
