Nice guys finish first.
CROWD CONTROL
New York police issued 176 summonses after the Yankees won their first World Series in 18 years, but almost all of them were for minor transgressions. The big thing is, none was for a violent act.
Championships like they oughta be.
POLL THIS
Coming off their 27-24 victory over Illinois, Northwestern moved up to 10th in the CNN/USA Today coaches’ poll and 11th in the Associated Press poll.
Hmmm, the Wildcats seem to be creeping up in the rankings the way they creep back into every game. Tell you what, Florida and Ohio State better watch out for the last 30 seconds of the voting on Jan. 3.
ANOTHER NICE ITEM
Playing only his third tournament since injuring his wrist at Wimbledon, Boris Becker fired 29 aces in front of a roaring home crowd and beat the top player in the world, Pete Sampras, to win the Eurocard Open.
Said the classy Sampras, who lost for the first time in 21 matches: “There’s only one king in Germany, and his name is Boris.”
ON ICE
It would be easy to rip the Blackhawks after their stupefying 6-2 loss to San Jose at home, especially after they surrendered three goals in 87 seconds midway through the first period.
But it was only their first loss in two weeks and they’re still tied for second in the Central Division.
MUST-SEE TV
Suddenly, the Bears are Monday night monsters. They’re won two of their last three on Monday nights, one at home and one on the road. By the way, that road win came in Minnesota, where they have won two straight and outscored the Vikings 49-24.
This is where all the pieces get back in place.
ONE MO’ TIME
The New York Giants whipped the Detroit Lions 35-7 in the Silverdome, sparked by a 23-point outburst in less than five minutes. And one of those scores was a 32-yard interception return by former Bears defensive back Maurice Douglass, the first of his career.
Cool, Mo D.
