Terry Labonte, trying to earn his second season title and first since 1984, goes into the NAPA 500 holding a 47-point lead over Hendrick Motorsports teammate and defending series champion Jeff Gordon.
Labonte can wrap it up by finishing eighth or better. Gordon needs to finish at least 12 positions ahead of Labonte to have any shot at the title. Also within reach is Dale Jarrett, trailing by 99 points. He can claim the crown if he wins and Labonte finishes 29th or worse and Gordon 14th or worse.
