Round Lake District 116 Board of Education is considering a districtwide dress code for its students, which might go into effect for the 1997-98 school year.
A growing concern about the role clothes play in the students’ lives triggered the discussion at last Thursday’s meeting.
A dress code would keep gang identification out of the schools and de-emphasize the social status and competition of clothing, officials say.
According to Murphy Elementary Principal Lynn Butera, “We want to build a child’s self-esteem and not make a child’s clothes the main issue. Grades are more important.”
