Officials from IKEA, the Swedish retailer of ready-to-assemble home furnishings, broke ground Thursday in Schaumburg for its largest U.S. store and its third-largest in the world.
The three-story, nearly 400,000-square-foot structure will be on McConnor Parkway, north of Golf Road and of the Woodfield Shopping University campus. It is scheduled to open in about a year.
Jan Kjellman, president of IKEA North America, noted that a large amount of furniture is purchased in the Chicago market.
“This area is very well-known. We should have actually been here sooner,” he said.
The chain has 128 stores in 26 countries, including 13 in the U.S.
