The Algonquin and Lake in the Hills Police Departments will go up against each other in a basketball fundraiser to benefit CrimeStoppers and their respective benevolent associations.

The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 18 at Jacobs High School, 500 S. Randall Rd., Algonquin.

“It’s a way for the people to do something for the community,” said Algonquin Police Chief Russell Laine.

The two departments have competed against each other on the basketball court before, and the rivalry between the teams is “friendly,” Laine said.

Algonquin won last year’s game and has possession of the traveling trophy, and the force plans to keep it for another year.

“We were thinking of buying them a smaller trophy so they would have something to go home with because we don’t intend to give up the other one,” Laine said.

Those attending the fundraiser not only get the game, but also the chance to win some door prizes, he added.

The money raised will go to the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills CrimeStoppers program and the benevolent associations of each department, Laine said.

Algonquin will use its share for fitness equipment at its new police facility, he added.

Other projects the department’s association has been involved with have been the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program and giving away turkeys at Christmastime, Laine said.

On the grow: The Algonquin Police Department grew by four officers this month, as the new personnel were sworn in on April 1.

Joining the ranks are Amy Totemeier, a graduate of the Police Training Institute in Champaign, and Joy Montgomery, Mike Carroll and Jason Camarda, who will begin their 10-week training Monday at the Illinois State Police academy in Springfield.

“Following that, they will go through our internal field program for 10 to 12 weeks, Laine said.

Chow time:el The Lake in the Hills Police Department will host its annual Lunch with a Cop program from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 18 and 25 at the American Legion Hall at Algonquin and Pyott Roads in Lake in the Hills.

The program will feature lunch, a puppet show and safety tips for pre-school-age children and their parents. There is no charge to attend.

Young leaders sought: Applications are available through the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department for area teenagers who wish to attend the Illinois Teenage Institute on Substance Abuse this summer.

The program will be held in two sessions at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. The sessions are from July 20-24 and Aug. 3-7.

Students must meet certain criteria to attend, such as earning passing grades, being a freshman, sophomore or junior, and being responsible and willing to serve as a youth leader and prevention resource at school, neighborhood or community.
