Marks Bros. expanding: Marks Bros. Jewelers Inc. said it increased the number of stores it plans to open in 1997 to 30 from 28 as part of its expansion program. Six of the new stores were purchased from other jewelers, the Chicago-based company said. Two stores are expected to open before Oct. 31. The company didn’t disclose terms of the purchases or say how many of the other new stores are now open. Marks Bros. currently operates 172 stores in 24 states; in the Chicago area they are called Whitehall Jewellers.
