The Barrington Plan Commission voted 4-0 Tuesday night to recommend approval of a proposal to create a 40-merchant antique market in the vacant Seigle’s property at 200 N. Hough St.
Plan Commission Chairman Greg Furda said the group’s action on the project, proposed March 18, was the fastest consideration of a major development by the Plan Commission since 1991.
In a related 4-0 vote, the commission recommended approval of the use of the Goltra Foundry property at 123 W. Liberty St. for the manufacture and sale of wood products. Both buildings are on the same 4-acre site.
Thomas Hayward Jr., an attorney for Renard Goltra, owner of the site, said Goltra wants to help revitalize Barrington’s downtown by allowing about 40 merchants to sell antiques in an open market in part of the 40,000-square-foot Seigle’s building.
The mall is to be managed by Al and Rose Pickett, who own Silk ‘N Things in Barrington.
The Village Board is expected to discuss the full proposal May 12. If it is approved, the first tenants could occupy the Market Center by mid-June, Hayward said.
