For a buck, you can own a piece of history, and live in it too.

The catch? To buy the historic Durant House in Kane County, you must be able to move it to a suitable building site.

The circa 1849 Greek revival style building stands on grounds west of St. Charles used as a private retreat by the Order of Felician Sisters. While the sisters utilize another building on the property, they don’t use the Durant House and are lacking funds to maintain it.

Mark VanKerkhoff, preservation planner for the Kane County Development Department, is heading up the search for a buyer to move and possibly rehabilitate the Durant House.

Besides owning a historically significant home at a bargain price, the buyer will have other advantages. The Durant House has the potential to qualify as a Kane County landmark, and the house would be safeguarded from incompatible development nearby.

If historically sensitive rehabilitation of the home is planned, the owners could benefit from huge tax savings through a property tax freeze.

The Kane County Development Department will also offer historical, architectural, and technical assistance by specialists on its staff.

VanKerkhoff urged interested parties to contact him promptly, adding that this “historic opportunity” won’t last. For further information, or to schedule an appointment to view the home, call VanKerkhoff at 630-232-3451.
