Power merger rejected: Federal energy regulators on Wednesday rejected the planned $6 billion merger of Northern States Power Co. and Wisconsin Energy Corp. and gave the companies three months to work out an acceptable plan. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, in rejecting the deal as it was proposed, overruled a finding by an administrative law judge that the utilities’ plans for independent power systems would resolve concerns about competition in Wisconsin and upper Michigan.
