Your July 26 editorial condemning William Weld’s nomination to be U.S. ambassador to Mexico was quite unconvincing. Clearly anybody who can govern an unruly state like Massachu-setts and knows the language and culture of the country in question can be a competent ambassador, but you failed to state your main objection to Gov. Weld–his party.

If he were a Democrat, his nomination would be in little trouble; but if there is anybody a right-wing Republican like Sen. Jesse Helms hates more than a liberal Democrat, it’s a liberal Republican. The Colonel would have been proud of your editorial.
