Faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison medical school are complaining that dwindling funds are forcing them to see more patients and spend less time at what they are supposed to do: Research and teach.
“There was a period in academic medicine when money was literally rolling in,” said Dr. Jeff Grossman, associate dean for clinical affairs and interim chairman of the Department of Medicine at UW-Madison.
Now money is more scarce and the school needs to define its mission and realign its resources, he said. Government funding for the poor and for rare diseases has been cut, he said.
